Summer may be winding down, but for a lot of trucks, the real work is just getting started.
Fall brings hunting trips, firewood, landscaping projects, equipment trailers, jobsite loads, campers, utility trailers, and plenty of last-minute towing before winter arrives. Changing weather and heavier workloads can also expose weaknesses in your truck’s suspension, braking, and air system.
Before the season changes, give your tow rig a quick fall readiness check.
1. Check Your Truck Under Its Actual Fall Load
Your truck may sit perfectly level when empty but look very different once you add trailer tongue weight, tools, equipment, or cargo.
Load the truck the way you normally use it and look for:
- Rear-end sag
- A nose-high stance
- Reduced suspension travel
- Bottoming out over bumps
- Changes in steering or handling
- Headlights pointing higher than normal
These are signs your rear suspension may need additional load support.
Pacbrake’s ALPHA™ Air Suspension provides adjustable support so you can add pressure when carrying a load and reduce it when the truck is unloaded. The goal is a level, controlled truck—not simply a truck that looks level.
2. Prepare for Loads That Change From Day-to-Day
Fall workloads are rarely consistent.
Monday could mean tools in the bed. Friday could mean a utility trailer. The weekend could mean a camper, boat, ATV trailer, or load of firewood.
That is where adjustable air suspension has an advantage over a fixed suspension upgrade.
Instead of setting your truck up for one permanent load, ALPHA™ Air Springs let you adjust the amount of support to match what you are actually carrying.
Pair them with BRAVO™ Wireless Air Controls and those adjustments can be made directly from your smartphone or standalone remote. You can monitor air spring pressure, make adjustments as the load changes, and save frequently used settings as presets, all in the palm of your hand.
Hook up. Select your setting. Fine-tune the pressure if needed. Get back to work.
3. Use BRAVO Presets for Repeat Loads
If your truck regularly switches between the same few jobs, BRAVO's three presets can make those transitions much easier.
Instead of remembering the pressure you used last time, select the appropriate preset and make any final adjustment based on the current load.
For contractors, landscapers, farmers, recreational towers, and anyone whose truck does more than one job, that flexibility can be especially useful.
4. Inspect Your Tires Before Cooler Weather Arrives
As outdoor temperatures drop, tire pressure drops with them.
Check the pressure and condition of both your truck and trailer tires, including the spare. Look for abnormal wear, cracking, cuts, embedded objects, or tread that is approaching replacement.
While you are underneath the truck, inspect your hitch hardware, trailer connection, safety chains, electrical connector, and visible suspension components as well.
A few minutes in the driveway beats discovering a problem with a loaded trailer behind you.
5. Don't Forget Downhill Control
Fall towing can mean wet roads, steep grades, mountain highways, and heavy trailers.
Make sure your truck and trailer braking systems are working properly before heading out. Trucks equipped for compatible applications can also benefit from a Pacbrake PRXB™ Exhaust Brake, which helps provide additional vehicle speed control on descents and reduces reliance on the service brakes.
Better control going downhill becomes especially valuable when the truck is working harder and road conditions are less predictable.
6. Put Onboard Air to Work
Compressed air becomes useful fast once your truck starts spending more time on jobsites, backroads, trails, or remote worksites.
A Pacbrake Onboard Air setup can provide a convenient air source for jobs such as inflating truck and trailer tires and powering suitable pneumatic accessories.
Certain BRAVO™ Wireless Air Control Combo Kits combine air spring control with an onboard air tank, giving you suspension adjustment and usable compressed air from the same truck-mounted system.
That means less searching for a compressor when a tire needs attention and more capability wherever the work takes you.
7. Keep Your Truck Within Its Factory Ratings
Air suspension can dramatically improve how a loaded truck sits and behaves, but it does not increase the vehicle's GVWR, payload rating, towing capacity, GCWR, or the ratings of your tires and hitch.
Always calculate your actual load and remain within the limits specified by the vehicle, hitch, tire, and trailer manufacturers.
Think of air springs as a way to help your suspension manage an approved load more effectively, not as permission to carry additional weight.
8. Be Ready for the Colder Seasons Ahead
For many truck owners, fall isn't the end of recreation season—it's the countdown to snowmobile season.
Whether you're hauling sleds on a sled deck or towing a snowmobile trailer, the added weight can put serious demand on your rear suspension. ALPHA™ Air Suspension helps level the truck under load, while BRAVO™ Wireless Air Controls make pressure adjustments easy as your setup changes.
Winter also means snow-covered trailheads and backroads. Keeping Pacbrake Recovery Ropes or on board Traction Boards provides an added layer of preparedness when traction gets limited.
Pacbrake Recovery Ropes provide a safer, more controlled way to help recover a stuck vehicle, using their stretch to absorb shock and deliver smoother pulling force than a rigid tow strap. While Traction Boards provide quick, dependable grip in snow, mud, sand, or loose terrain, helping your tires regain traction and get you moving without needing another vehicle.
Support the load. Be ready for whatever the season throws at you
Summer Ends. Truck Season Doesn't.
Parking the boat or travel trailer doesn't mean your truck gets the season off.
For many owners, fall simply replaces summer toys with tools, equipment, utility trailers, hunting gear, firewood, campers, and heavier everyday workloads.
A properly prepared truck should be ready for all of them.
With ALPHA™ Air Suspension providing adjustable load support, BRAVO™ Wireless Air Controls putting pressure adjustments and presets at your fingertips, and Pacbrake onboard air and braking solutions adding capability where you need it, your truck can stay ready long after summer towing season ends.
Summer is temporary. Workloads aren't. Prepare your truck for whatever you're hauling next.
